How to Cancel Your ChatGPT Plus Free Trial Before You're Charged
Last verified: October 23, 2026, against the OpenAI Help Center, OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing pages, the App Store listing, Apple Support and Google Play Help.
Quick answer
- Is there a ChatGPT Plus free trial? Not a standard one. OpenAI's pricing page lists Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans and doesn't mention a free trial (ChatGPT pricing). Free Plus trials come through invites and promotions: OpenAI "may make available to eligible users the ability to invite their friends and family to a free, limited-duration trial." (OpenAI Help: Promotional subscriptions/free trial invites)
- Trials renew automatically: "ChatGPT will automatically renew as a paid subscription at the end of the initial free trial or promotional subscription period using the payment method on file, unless you cancel before the trial or promotional period ends." (same source)
- To cancel on the web: sign in to ChatGPT → account menu → Settings → Billing → under Cancel plan, select Cancel. (OpenAI Help: Canceling your ChatGPT subscription)
- Subscribed in the iPhone or Android app? Cancel with Apple or Google Play, not on chatgpt.com.
- Deadline: "Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid being charged for the next subscription period." (same source)
ChatGPT Plus free trial and price now
Free trial: there's no fixed trial length. Invite links offer "a free limited-duration trial or subscription of ChatGPT (for example, for 3 months)," and the promo details tell you the "duration of free trials, free trial plan, invitee eligibility, and restrictions." "Generally, new users or users on free plans are eligible." "Some promotions require adding a valid payment method to start the trial." Promo codes are "single-use and cannot be stacked." (OpenAI Help: Promotional subscriptions/free trial invites)
Offers for specific groups: OpenAI also runs free Plus offers for verified groups, such as US college students (OpenAI Help: Back to School offer) and eligible US service members, veterans and retirees (OpenAI Help: service member offer). Each has its own eligibility rules and deadline, and both renew as paid Plus unless you cancel.
Cancelling a promo early can end it. For the student offer, OpenAI says that if you cancel, "any remaining promotional months are forfeited." For the service member offer, "Plus access may end immediately, and promotional pricing cannot be restored after cancellation." If you want to keep the free months, cancel close to the end of the offer, but at least 24 hours before the first charge.
What you'll pay after the trial: "ChatGPT Plus is a subscription plan that provides enhanced access to the ChatGPT web app for $20/month." It's "billed monthly," and "we do not support annual billing or the option to pay for multiple months in advance for ChatGPT Plus subscriptions." (OpenAI Help: What is ChatGPT Plus?) OpenAI's pricing page says paid plans "are priced per user per month." (ChatGPT pricing)
In the iPhone app: the price can differ from the web. The US App Store lists "ChatGPT Plus" at $19.99 among ChatGPT's in-app purchases. (App Store: ChatGPT)
The free plan stays free: "The free version of ChatGPT is available to everyone." (ChatGPT pricing) You don't need to delete your account to cancel Plus: "If you only want to stop future charges, you do not need to delete your ChatGPT account." (OpenAI Help: Canceling)
Step 1: Check who bills you
"Cancel your subscription through the platform where you purchased it." A subscription bought on chatgpt.com "does not appear in your Apple or Google Play subscriptions." Check your purchase receipt to see which platform billed you. (OpenAI Help: Canceling)
To check everywhere at once: - iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → look for ChatGPT. - Android: Google Play Store → profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → look for ChatGPT. - Web: chatgpt.com → Settings → Billing.
(OpenAI Help: Avoid being charged twice)
How to cancel ChatGPT Plus on the web (chatgpt.com)
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open your account menu and select Settings.
- Select Billing.
- Under Cancel plan, select Cancel.
"If billing controls are missing on chatgpt.com, sign in to the same ChatGPT account in a different browser." Can't sign in? For web-billed plans, OpenAI Support can help if you give "the email linked to your account or subscription ... plus any two of these billing details: your payment card's last four digits, the card expiration date, the billing address associated with the subscription, or the date of the most recent charge." "Never send the complete card number." (OpenAI Help: Canceling)
How to cancel on iPhone or iPad (billed by Apple)
- Open Settings.
- Select your name.
- Select Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Select Cancel Subscription and confirm.
"If Cancel Subscription is not available and an expiration date is shown, the subscription may already be canceled." (OpenAI Help: Canceling) On a Mac: open the App Store → click your name at the bottom of the sidebar → click your name again → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel Subscription. Apple says to cancel a trial "at least 24 hours before the trial ends." (Apple Support)
Heads-up: "Deleting your ChatGPT account does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription. Cancel the subscription through Apple before deleting your account."
How to cancel on Android (billed by Google Play)
Sign in to the Google account you used to subscribe.
- Play Store app: open Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel subscription → follow the instructions.
- Play website: open your Google Play subscriptions → next to ChatGPT, select Manage → Cancel subscription → pick a reason → Continue.
(OpenAI Help: Canceling) "When you uninstall the app, your subscription won't cancel." (Google Play Help)
ChatGPT Business, carriers and other promos
- Self-service ChatGPT Business: account menu → Workspace settings → Billing → Manage plan → Cancel subscription. No access? "Ask your workspace owner for help." (OpenAI Help: Canceling)
- Promo through a carrier or partner: OpenAI's promo FAQ notes that "Additional rules may apply based on your carrier's agreement." (OpenAI Help: Promotions) Check the offer terms and cancel with whoever bills you.
Don't get charged twice
If you start Plus on a second platform before cancelling the first, "you can end up paying for more than one subscription at the same time." To switch to chatgpt.com, cancel the Apple or Google subscription first. One catch on iPhone: if an Apple renewal fails, "your subscription is not automatically canceled." If you later update your Apple payment method, Apple may use it to renew ChatGPT, even if you already subscribed somewhere else. Cancel it in Apple Settings "even if it appears inactive." (OpenAI Help: Avoid being charged twice)
What happens after you cancel
- Access: "After an ordinary cancellation, paid features remain available until the end of the current billing period."
- No automatic refund: "Canceling stops future renewals. It does not automatically refund previous charges."
- Deleting your account "cancels subscriptions billed directly by ChatGPT," but not Apple subscriptions. Check Google Play too. You don't need to delete your account just to stop charges.
- Confirm it: "Check your subscription status on the platform that billed you to confirm the subscription is no longer set to renew."
Already charged? Refund tips
- OpenAI's policy: "Payments are generally non-refundable." But "for an unused individual subscription purchase, a discretionary refund may be available if you contact us within seven days of the charge," with "no substantial use" and other conditions. OpenAI also says "forgetting to cancel ... does not by itself qualify," so act fast and be honest about your use. (OpenAI Help: Request a refund)
- Billed on chatgpt.com or Google Play: sign in to the account that was charged, open help.openai.com, and request a refund in the chat widget. If eligible, OpenAI processes web refunds "within 5-7 business days" and Google Play refunds "within 10 business days." If a refund is granted, access covered by that charge "normally ends." (same source)
- Billed by Apple: "cancellations and refunds must be requested directly from Apple." Go to reportaproblem.apple.com → "I'd like to" → "Request a refund." Expect an update in 24 to 48 hours. (OpenAI Help, Apple Support)
- EU, UK and Turkey: "you are eligible for a prorated refund if you cancel your subscription within 14 days of purchase." (OpenAI Help: Request a refund)
FAQ
Does ChatGPT Plus have a free trial in 2026? Not a standard one. OpenAI's pricing page lists a Free plan and paid plans and doesn't mention a free trial. Free ChatGPT Plus trials are offered through invites and promotions to eligible users, usually new users or people on the Free plan, and the length depends on the offer.
How much is ChatGPT Plus after the free trial? OpenAI's Help Center lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month, billed monthly, with no annual option. In the iPhone app, the US App Store lists ChatGPT Plus at $19.99.
How do I cancel my ChatGPT Plus free trial? On chatgpt.com, open your account menu, select Settings, then Billing, and under Cancel plan select Cancel. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel in your Apple or Google Play subscriptions.
Will my ChatGPT Plus trial turn into a paid subscription? Yes, unless you cancel. OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically renews as a paid subscription at the end of a free trial or promotional period using the payment method on file, unless you cancel before it ends.
When do I have to cancel ChatGPT Plus to avoid being charged? OpenAI says to cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date. After you cancel, paid features stay available until the end of the current billing period.
Can I get a refund for ChatGPT Plus? Payments are generally non-refundable, but OpenAI may give a discretionary refund for an unused individual subscription if you ask within seven days of the charge and meet its conditions. Request it in the help.openai.com chat. If Apple billed you, request the refund from Apple.
Does deleting the ChatGPT app or my account cancel Plus? Uninstalling the app does not cancel your subscription. Deleting your account cancels a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, but not one billed through Apple, so cancel in Apple or Google Play first.
Why was I charged twice for ChatGPT Plus? You may have subscriptions on more than one platform, such as Apple and chatgpt.com, or under different accounts. Check Apple, Google Play and chatgpt.com, and cancel the one you don't want where it was purchased.
Never pay for a forgotten trial
Free Plus invites renew at the full price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the billing date. That's the gap TrialGuard fills. Forward your ChatGPT Plus sign-up or receipt email to add@trialguard.app and get an email 2 days before you're charged. It's free for up to 3 active trials. TrialGuard Plus ($29/year or $3.99/month, see plans) adds unlimited trials and reminders on the days you choose (default 7, 3, 2 and 1 days before; add the day of if you like). If your trial is billed through Apple or Google Play, TrialGuard spots that and tells you where to cancel. TrialGuard reminds you; you still cancel ChatGPT Plus yourself.
