How to Cancel Your Duolingo Free Trial (Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max)
Last verified: October 24, 2026, against Duolingo Help, the Duolingo Terms and Conditions, Duolingo's Super page, the App Store and Google Play listings, Apple Support and Google Play Help.
Quick answer
- Is there a Duolingo free trial? Yes, for Super Duolingo, but the length varies by platform and offer. Check the end date on your sign-up screen or in your confirmation email.
- It renews automatically: "All subscriptions are auto-renewing unless canceled." (Duolingo Help: What is Super Duolingo?)
- Cancel where you subscribed: "You will need to cancel your subscription based on how you originally started the subscription." (Duolingo Help: How do I cancel?)
- On the web: profile picture โ Settings โ Super Duolingo โ Cancel subscription. (same source)
- Deleting the app doesn't cancel: "Deleting the app and/or your account does not cancel your subscription." (same source)
- Your streak is safe: "Your streak and learning progress will not be affected." (same source)
Duolingo free trial length and price
Super Duolingo trial length varies by platform. When we checked on October 24, 2026, Duolingo's web Super page offered "Start my 1 week free" (duolingo.com/super), while the App Store and Google Play listings said "try Super Duolingo for 14 days free!" (App Store, Google Play). Duolingo also says it sometimes runs "small tests on our subscriptions and features" (Duolingo Help: What is Super Duolingo?), so the offer you get may differ from both. Your sign-up screen and confirmation email show your real end date.
Duolingo Max: Max "includes all the benefits of Super Duolingo, along with AI-powered features: Roleplay and Video Call with Lily." It's sold only in the app: "Duolingo Max cannot be purchased on web." (Duolingo Help: What is Duolingo Max?) Duolingo's help pages don't describe a standard Max free trial. Duolingo's Terms do mention extended free trial codes for "Super Duolingo or Duolingo Max" (below). If the app offers you a Max trial, the offer screen and your confirmation email show when it ends.
Promo-code trials: Duolingo also hands out "Extended Free Trial Codes" for Super or Max. You must pick a plan and enter payment details to redeem one, and "unless you cancel at least 24 hours before your extended free trial ends, you will automatically become a recurring subscriber." Existing subscribers can't redeem them, and you can redeem "only one Extended Free Trial Code per calendar year." (Duolingo Terms ยง20)
What you'll pay after the trial: it depends on the plan (Super, Super Family, Max or Max Family), whether you pay monthly or yearly, where you subscribe and your country. Duolingo's help pages don't list prices, so check the price on the plan screen before you start the trial and on your receipt email. Duolingo "may revise the pricing for the goods and services offered through the Service at any time." (Duolingo Terms ยง10)
Step 1: Check who bills you
Duolingo says "The platform where you initially subscribe is where you'll manage your subscription." (Duolingo Help: What is Super Duolingo?) Duolingo Max is always bought in the iOS or Android app, so it's usually billed by Apple or Google Play. Your receipt email shows who took the payment: a "receipt from Apple," a Google Play receipt, or a Duolingo receipt for web purchases.
How to cancel Super Duolingo on the web (desktop)
If you subscribed in a web browser:
- Sign in to your Duolingo account in a web browser.
- Click your profile picture at the top of the home screen and choose Settings.
- Select Super Duolingo.
- Select Cancel subscription and confirm.
(Duolingo Help: How do I cancel my Super Duolingo subscription?)
How to cancel in the Duolingo app (iPhone or Android)
If you subscribed in the Duolingo app, Duolingo's steps are:
- Open the Duolingo app.
- Tap the Super icon at the top of the home screen.
- Tap Settings (gear icon).
- Tap Manage subscription.
- Select Cancel subscription and proceed to cancel.
- Confirm the cancellation through the Google Play Store, App Store or Alipay.
(same source) Duolingo says it tests changes to the app, so a menu label can look slightly different on your account. The last step happens in the store, so you can also go straight there:
iPhone or iPad (billed by Apple)
Settings โ your name โ Subscriptions โ Duolingo โ Cancel Subscription. "If there is no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already canceled." On a Mac: App Store โ your name at the bottom of the sidebar โ your name again โ Subscriptions โ Duolingo โ Cancel Subscription. Apple says: "If you signed up for a trial subscription and you don't want to renew it, cancel it at least 24 hours before the trial ends." (Apple Support) The App Store listing adds that your account "will be charged for renewal within 24-hours prior to the end of the current period." (App Store: Duolingo)
Android (billed by Google Play)
On your Android device, go to subscriptions in Google Play โ Duolingo โ Cancel subscription โ follow the instructions. "When you uninstall the app, your subscription won't cancel." (Google Play Help)
Subscribed through your phone's settings? Duolingo's help page says Android users should "Submit a support request" to Duolingo, and iPhone users should follow Apple's instructions (the iPhone steps above). (Duolingo Help)
How to cancel Duolingo Max
Max is bought in the iOS or Android app (Duolingo Help: What is Duolingo Max?), so cancel it the same way as an app subscription: in the Duolingo app (Super icon โ Settings โ Manage subscription โ Cancel subscription) and confirm in the App Store or Google Play, or go straight to your Apple or Google Play subscriptions as shown above.
Upgraded from Super to Max with Apple? Duolingo says Apple "will bill you for the full price of the Duolingo Max subscription, and issue a prorated refund for your previous Super Duolingo subscription based on how much time is remaining." (same source)
What happens after you cancel
Per Duolingo Help:
- "Your streak and learning progress will not be affected."
- "You will be able to use Super Duolingo features for the remainder of the subscription period."
- "You will no longer be billed automatically once you cancel your subscription."
- "You can reactivate your subscription anytime."
- "Canceling your subscription will not retroactively refund subscription payments," and fees "cannot be prorated based on cancellation date."
Trial from a promo code: "If you cancel during your extended free trial, you will lose access to the subscription service at the end of the free trial." (Duolingo Terms ยง20) So you can cancel early and keep using it until the trial ends.
When to cancel: Apple says to cancel App Store trials "at least 24 hours before the trial ends," and Duolingo's promo-code terms use the same 24-hour cut-off. Duolingo doesn't state a cut-off for web or Google Play trials, so cancelling a day or more early is a safe habit. You keep Super until the end of the period either way.
Already charged? Refund tips
- Duolingo's policy: "Generally, all charges for in-app purchases are nonrefundable, and there are no refunds or credits for partially used periods." (Duolingo Help: How do I request a refund?) The Terms add "unless otherwise required by the law in your jurisdiction." (Duolingo Terms ยง12) Asking is still free, but a refund isn't guaranteed.
- Billed on the web: sign in on a web browser โ click the Super icon at the top of the home screen โ scroll toward the bottom and choose the option to contact Duolingo support โ send an email saying you need a refund for your web subscription. "A member of our support team will review your request." (Duolingo Help)
- Billed by Google Play (Android): contact Duolingo support through its help page and pick "Purchase Issue", saying you need a refund. (same source) Google says contacting the app developer "is often the quickest way," or you can ask Google Play. (Google Play Help) Duolingo's Terms also say Google Play purchases are refunded by Google, not Duolingo, so if Duolingo support can't help, request it from Google Play. (Duolingo Terms ยง12)
- Billed by Apple (iPhone/iPad): "Refunds are handled by Apple, not Duolingo." (Duolingo Help) Go to reportaproblem.apple.com โ "I'd like to" โ Request a refund โ choose a reason and the subscription โ Submit. Expect an update in 24 to 48 hours. (Apple Support)
