(Spotify: How to cancel Premium plans)
Important for free trials: Spotify says that "if you cancel during a zero-priced free trial period, your account will switch over to our free service immediately," and that "zero-priced free trials can't be reactivated." (Spotify)
So with Spotify, the usual "cancel on day one and keep the free days" trick doesn't work for a free ($0) trial. If you want the whole trial, cancel close to the end, but before it ends. A reminder a couple of days ahead is the safest way to do that.
When does Spotify charge you?
- Spotify's terms say that unless you cancel before the end of the trial period, your payment method "will automatically be charged the then-current recurring price on the first day following the end of the Trial." (Spotify Paid Subscription Terms, §4.3)
- Spotify's help page says the same thing more simply: "Once your free trial has ended, your paid subscription will continue at the advertised recurring price, unless you cancel it beforehand." (Spotify: Charged for a free trial)
- A small charge when you sign up isn't the first payment. Spotify says you may see "an authorization charge for a nominal amount" when you start a trial. It's "only a temporary hold" to check your card. Spotify releases it immediately, but your bank may take longer to remove it. (Spotify)
- Price increases: if you're on a trial offer when Spotify raises prices, Spotify says you get "one month at the original price after your trial ends," and then the new price applies. (Spotify: Price updates)
Check your exact trial end date and plan on your account page, where Spotify says you can see "your receipts, and details of your plan and payments." (Spotify)
Step 1: Find out who bills you
You have to cancel in the place that charges you. On your account page, go to Manage your plan → Payment.
| What you see | Where to cancel |
|---|---|
| Spotify bills your card or PayPal directly | On Spotify's account page (steps below) |
| Your plan is "associated with a partner company (ex. your mobile or internet provider)" | With that partner. Spotify lists their contact details under Payment (Spotify) |
| Your receipts come from Apple or Google Play | In your Apple or Google Play subscriptions (steps below) |
Tip: if your account page has no option to change your plan, Spotify says "your plan is associated with a partner company." (Spotify)
How to cancel on the web (desktop or mobile browser)
- Sign in to your Spotify account page.
- Open Manage your plan.
- Choose Cancel subscription.
- Keep going until you see a confirmation, then go back to the account page and check what it says (see "Did it work?" below).
Spotify also says you can cancel "by completing this form and sending it to Spotify." The form is linked from the cancel page. (Spotify)
How to cancel on iPhone or iPad
If Spotify bills you directly (the usual case today), use the web steps above in Safari or another browser.
Spotify says paying for Premium through Apple's in-app payment system "has been discontinued." Some older subscriptions may still be billed by Apple. (Spotify: Apple payments for Spotify)
If Apple bills you (you get receipts from Apple):
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap Spotify.
- Tap Cancel Subscription. If there's no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red, it's already cancelled.
Apple advises that if you signed up for a trial and don't want to renew, you should cancel "at least 24 hours before the trial ends." (Apple Support)
How to cancel on Android
If Spotify bills you directly, use the web steps above in Chrome or another browser.
If Google Play bills you (receipts from Google Play):
- Open subscriptions in Google Play (Google Play app → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions).
- Select Spotify.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the instructions.
Google notes: "When you uninstall the app, your subscription won't cancel." (Google Play Help)
Billed by your phone or internet provider?
Contact that provider. Spotify says that if a partner manages your payments, "You need to contact that company for help," and that Spotify can't refund "Premium payments made through a partner." (Spotify: Canceled but still charged, Spotify: Refund policy)
Family and Duo plans
- Plan manager: follow the normal cancel steps. Spotify says to "let all plan members know as they'll lose their Premium benefits starting from the next payment date."
- Plan member: the cancel steps "will remove your account from the plan, but won't cancel it." Ask the plan manager to cancel.
(Spotify)
Do you keep Premium after cancelling?
It depends on what you're cancelling:
| You cancel… | What happens |
|---|---|
| A free ($0) trial | You switch to Spotify Free immediately, and the trial can't be reactivated (Spotify, Terms §4.3) |
| A paid/discounted trial | Unless Spotify says otherwise (for example during cancellation), you keep Premium until the end of the trial period (Terms §4.3) |
| A regular paid plan | "Your Premium stays until your next billing date, then your account switches to free" (Spotify) |
Either way, Spotify says "you keep your playlists and saved music when your account is free." (Spotify)
Did it work? How to check
Go to your account page and look at Payment under Your plan. Spotify explains what each status means (Spotify: Canceled but still charged):
- A date when your account will switch to Spotify Free: the cancellation worked.
- A date when your next payment is due: it's not cancelled. "Try the cancel steps again making sure you reach the confirmation message."
- Spotify Free, but you're still being charged: you're probably looking at the wrong account. Spotify says "you likely have Premium on a different Spotify account." Log out and try other login details.
- A partner company: contact that company.
Already charged? About refunds
Spotify's refund page says that if you don't want Premium anymore, "you can cancel any time and keep what you paid for." It also points to its terms for "more information about refunds and eligibility." Spotify can't refund payments made through a partner or store-bought gift cards. (Spotify: Refund policy)
If Apple billed you, Apple lets you request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com ("I'd like to" → "Request a refund"). Apple says to expect an update in 24 to 48 hours, and eligibility varies by country or region. (Apple Support)
If Google Play billed you, see Google Play's refund information, linked from its cancellation help page. (Google Play Help)
FAQ
If I cancel my Spotify free trial today, do I keep Premium until the trial ends? Not for a free ($0) trial. Spotify switches you to the free service immediately, and the trial can't be reactivated. For a paid or discounted trial, you normally keep Premium until the end of the trial period.
When will Spotify charge me after the free trial? On the first day after the trial ends, at the then-current recurring price, unless you cancelled before the end.
Why did Spotify charge me a small amount when I started the trial? It's probably an authorization charge, a temporary hold to verify your card. Spotify releases it immediately, but your bank may take longer to show that.
Can I get another Spotify free trial? Usually not. Spotify says you're not eligible if you've already had a trial, have bought Premium before, or have been a member of Premium Family or Duo.
I cancelled but I'm still being charged. Why? Check Payment on your account page. If it still shows a next payment date, the cancellation didn't go through. If it shows Spotify Free, you may have Premium on a different Spotify account. If a partner bills you, contact the partner.
Does deleting the Spotify app cancel Premium? No. Cancel on your account page, or with Apple or Google Play if they bill you. Google notes that uninstalling an app doesn't cancel a subscription.
Remember the end date without setting alarms
With Spotify's free trial, cancelling early costs you the rest of the trial, and cancelling late costs you a month's payment. The right moment is just before the end.
TrialGuard is built for that. Forward your Spotify trial sign-up email to TrialGuard and it will remind you 2 days before you're charged (now in early access).
