Last verified: October 21, 2026, against YouTube, Apple and Google help pages.

Quick answer

  1. On a computer, go to youtube.com/paid_memberships.
  2. Click Manage membership, then Deactivate.
  3. Click Continue to cancel, choose a reason, click Next, then Yes, cancel.

(YouTube Help: Cancel YouTube Premium)

Good news for trials: YouTube says that if you cancel during a trial, "you'll lose access to your Premium benefits at the end of your trial period." (YouTube Help: Trials & promotions) So you can cancel the same day you sign up and still keep the full free month. (This is the opposite of Spotify, where cancelling a free trial ends Premium right away.)

How long is the trial, and what does it cost after?

What YouTube shows (US, checked Oct 21, 2026)
Standard trial "1-month trial for $0", for eligible new members only
Individual after the trial $15.99/month
Family $26.99/month
Premium Lite $8.99/month (plans "starting from $8.99/month")
Individual, 1 year (prepaid) 12 months for $159.99
Reminder from YouTube "You'll be reminded 7 days before your trial ends."

Source: youtube.com/premium. Prices are US and before tax. Offers vary by country, account and promotion, and YouTube sometimes runs longer "extended trials", so check the end date on your own account.

Who gets a trial (YouTube Help): - Introductory trials are for first-time members, or people who cancelled Premium, Music Premium or Premium Lite at least 6 months ago. Only 1 trial per 12 months. - Extended trials are for first-time members or people who cancelled 3 or more years ago. Only 1 per 3 years. - One trial per payment method. Workspace accounts generally can't get Individual or Family plans unless it's a Workspace Individual edition account.

When will YouTube charge you?

  • "When your trial ends, your membership will automatically renew using the payment method on file. You'll be charged the current membership price on a recurring monthly basis unless you cancel before the end of the trial." (YouTube Help)
  • The Paid Service Terms say the same: "To avoid any charges, you must cancel your subscription before the end of the trial period." (YouTube Paid Service Terms, ยง3.2)
  • A small charge at sign-up is just a check. YouTube says you may see an authorization charge that "won't be processed, and will disappear within 1-14 days." (YouTube Help)

  2. Tap the membership you want to cancel.
  3. Tap Continue to cancel.
  4. Choose your reason and tap Next.
  5. Tap Yes, cancel.

If Google Play bills you, cancel in Google Play instead: Google Play app โ†’ profile โ†’ Payments & subscriptions โ†’ Subscriptions โ†’ YouTube โ†’ Cancel subscription. Google notes: "When you uninstall an app, your subscription won't cancel." (YouTube Help: Android, Google Play Help)

How to cancel on iPhone or iPad

In the YouTube app (YouTube Help: iPhone & iPad):

  1. Tap Settings, then Purchases and memberships.
  2. Tap the membership you want to cancel.
  3. Tap Manage Apple Subscriptions.
  4. Tap your membership.
  5. Tap Cancel.

Or from iPhone Settings: tap your name โ†’ Subscriptions โ†’ YouTube โ†’ Cancel Subscription. If there's no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red, it's already cancelled. Apple says to cancel a trial "at least 24 hours before the trial ends." (Apple Support)

Two catches on iPhone: - "iOS users who are billed through Google must cancel using a non-iOS device (for example, a computer)." (YouTube Help) - Pausing isn't available if Apple bills you.

On a smart TV or streaming device

YouTube's cancel page doesn't list steps for TV apps. Use a computer (youtube.com/paid_memberships) or your phone instead, signed in to the same Google account.

Did it work?

Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships and check the Status field. (YouTube Help) After you cancel, "you won't be charged again unless you re-subscribe," and your benefits continue until the end of the billing period (for a trial, the end of the trial).

Already charged? Refund tips

  • Billed by YouTube/Google: YouTube's refund policy says cancelling turns off auto-renewal, and "you won't be refunded for the period between when you cancel and when your membership ends." Refunds may be possible "if videos or features related to your YouTube purchase don't work." If one is granted, Premium access is removed. To cancel immediately and ask for a refund, YouTube says to contact the YouTube support team. Partially used prepaid or annual plans aren't refundable. (YouTube Help: Refunds)
  • Billed by Apple: YouTube can't refund Apple purchases. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com โ†’ "I'd like to" โ†’ "Request a refund". Apple says to expect an update in 24 to 48 hours. (YouTube Help, Apple Support)
  • Billed by Google Play: follow Google Play's refund process. (YouTube Help: Google Play refunds)
  • Ask quickly and politely. If the charge happened today and you haven't used Premium since, say so. Any refund is at the company's discretion, and this tip is not a guarantee.

Pause instead of cancel?

Members billed by YouTube can pause instead of cancelling (YouTube Help). Pausing isn't available with Apple billing, or with Google Play billing (YouTube Help: Refunds).

Never miss the end of a trial

YouTube says it'll remind you 7 days before your trial ends. That's helpful, but it's one email among many, and it isn't the only trial you have running. TrialGuard keeps them all in one place: forward each sign-up email to add@trialguard.app and get a reminder 2 days before each charge. It's free for up to 3 active trials. TrialGuard Plus ($3.99/month or $29/year) adds unlimited trials and extra reminders 7, 3 and 1 days before. TrialGuard reminds you; you still cancel with YouTube yourself.
